I like a little of this & a lot of that : literary fiction, children's books, young adult,  thrillers and mysteries, dystopian novels, sci-fi and fantasy.

I don't like horror or romance novels (how do you tell them apart?)

Happy World Book Day -- a little late!

Obedience

Obedience - Will Lavender

The first half is intriguing and makes you want to continually read (or listen as in this case) to try to figure out what in blazes is happening. The last half is disappointing and lame.

Three stars -- read the first half and then make up your own ending.

Shift

Shift - Em Bailey
I have never read anything quite like this young adult fantasy.

Olive is trying really hard to take her meds and go to therapy and help out at home by cooking and watching after her little brother but after a new student comes to town, her life is turned upside down for the second time in just a year. The first time the "incident" occurred and after that Olive dropped all her old friends and took up with a new one, Ami, much to Olive's mother's dismay.

Now Miranda, shows up at school, rumored to have killed her parents. Olive, gets a glance at Miranda and her strange mirrored eyes and knows something is wrong. With Ami's help she sets out to discover Miranda's secret.

This book is an interesting take on the destructiveness of the "popular" student clique. When can you choose to be an individual? If you try to be just like the most popular will you lose your identity or even your life?

Ms Bailey, has a gift for language. Describing Katie, the popular girl, she says: "I could just about feel the gleam of Katie's teeth, so radiant it was probably causing skin cancers on my face."

A Short History of Tractors in Ukranian

A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian - Marina Lewycka

I thought this book was really funny and I chose it for book club. Everyone hated it but one and she liked it because she likes tractors. Recently, I met someone who enjoyed the humor and thought the book was a blast so I feel redeemed.

Miffy's Birthday by Dick Bruna

Miffy's Birthday - Dick Bruna

It's Miffy's birthday. She puts on her best dress, gets gifts, and has a party.

Boldly illustrated in a style that highly appeals to babies and little toddlers.

Christmas Trees Made of Books

By: Diy Maven Dec 06, 2010

Gleeson library (San Francisco) used some of their books to make this tree and then
reshelved them after the holiday.

I LOVE this and wish I could make something similar.

Trouble with Shelves

There is this problem that occurs on my shelves and on others' shelves. If I go to someone's site and want to see what they are "currently reading" and I click on that button I see the appropriate list of books being read. Then if I want to see what their favorite books are and I click on "favorites" the shelves are empty. The only way I can get back is by clicking on "read" and then on "favorites." I can't even get back by clicking on "all".  Is there an easier way to do this??

Ivy + Bean

Ivy and Bean - Annie Barrows, Sophie Blackall

A cute story about two girls who become great friends. Neither one wants to play with the other one even though their mothers want them to. Of course, they end up thrust together and discover how much they compliment each other.

One of the girls is quite naughty and I'm not altogether sure this won't be copied by young readers although most will just find it funny -- I hope.

My favorite part of the book is the illustrations.

Hey, have you seen this film?

It's great: The Last Bookshop

The Good Night Book (Whitman Tell-A-tale #2487)

The Good Night Book (Whitman Tell-A-tale #2487) - Lynn and Mandy Wells

Delightful story told in rhyme of a toddler going to bed and saying goodnight to everything around her. A favorite of our daughter's when she was a babe (she is now in her 30's). My husband and I still remember the rhymes.

Wonderful to read aloud. Colorful, expressive illustrations.

Rackety-boom

Rackety-boom - Betty Ren Wright

This story of an old blue truck illustrates the importance of not getting rid of things simply because they are old. Beautifully written. A classic and a family favorite. My husband and I still remember parts of the rhymes and our daughter is now in her 30's.
